The water was as flat as glass when we launched our kayak at Musselburgh Lagoon. Musselburgh Lagoon is a man-made lake near the sea.
I was at the front paddling hard, my dad was at the back paddling harder and my brother was in the middle doing nothing and enjoying the ride.

It was evening when we were on the water so there was a fresh smell to the air. Even though it was rather cold, the water was warm if you put your hand into the lake.
There were two swans with a single cygnet nearby on the lake so we gave them a rather wide berth. The cygnet was so fluffy it looked like a cuddly toy. When they went ashore it shook itself and waddled to its nest.

On our circuits of the lake, we saw some tadpoles darting about in the shallows, they were the size of a pencil eraser and they had arms and legs whilst retaining their tails. My little brother poked one of them.
I saw a few brave minnows swim towards us but they darted away when they saw the paddles.
My brother kept on sticking his fingers in the water, even though Dad joked that a pike would bite them off.
It was a lovely experience.
